SYMBOLISM STUDY (AI, 2026)

REDON — THE BLACK YEARS

Odilon Redon spent thirty years working almost exclusively in black — charcoal, lithography, and dark ink wash. He called them his Noirs, and they were the dream-archive of nineteenth-century inwardness: floating eyes, weeping spiders, smiling balloons, profile heads with closed lids. The three works gathered here trace that strange interior cosmos — a single eye-balloon rising in warm dark space, a botanical-biological hybrid suspended in shadow, and a profile head dreaming with closed eyes among warm decorative forms. Note: the historical Noirs were rendered in literal charcoal black; this study translates them into warm sepia and umber tonalities while preserving their dream-character.

EYES CLOSED

PROFILE

A human head in profile, eyes closed, set against small, warm, decorative forms – leaves, eyes, buds, ornamental fragments. Redon called these works ‘dreaming heads’.

A FLOATING WITNESS

EYE

A single great eye rises through warm sepia space — Redon’s signature motif, the eye as balloon, as planet, as silent witness. The dream becomes literal: an organ of seeing detached from any body, floating in a chamber of warm shadow.

KHNOPFF — STILLED INTERIORS

The Belgian symbolist Fernand Khnopff brought Symbolism to its most withdrawn extreme. Where Redon dreamt outward toward floating eyes and hybrid creatures, Khnopff turned inward and emptied the canvas. His painted women stand in almost bare interiors, eyes closed or half-closed, expressions held in a stillness so deep it feels like ritual. The three works gathered here trace that withdrawn presence: a woman with her household sphinx in a stilled interior, a single profile head and a close head in three-quarter view in suspended attention. Note: Khnopff’s historical palette was famously silvery-cool; this study translates that silvery quality into warm earth with mauve-plum atmospheric accents while preserving his ritualistic stillness.

A FACE TURNED INWARD

SILENCE

A close head in three-quarter view, eyes lowered or closed, expression suspended in deepest attention. Khnopff brought Symbolism to its quietest extreme in these works — the face as instrument of pure inwardness, the painting as silence made visible.

A SUSPENDED FACE

PROFILE

A young woman in profile against an almost bare warm wall, eyes closed, lips just parted, expression neither tender nor cold but suspended. Khnopff painted these single faces as ritual objects — the woman not as character but as presence, the moment held outside time. The mauve-plum atmosphere does the silvery work the original cool palette did.

WITH THE HOUSEHOLD SPHINX

INTERIOr

A woman sits or stands in a sparse interior with a Sphinx-like cat resting near her — Khnopff’s most quoted motif, the woman and her household chimera. The room is reduced to essentials: a wall, a low table, a single curtain, the cat itself. Each element rewards close looking: the woman’s downward gaze, the cat’s narrow eyes, a single small ornament, the texture of fabric. Symbolist composition as careful arrangement of presences.

MOREAU — THE JEWELED VISION

Gustave Moreau was Symbolism’s elder — born a generation before Redon and Khnopff, he had been painting mythological tableaus when they were still in school. His method was unique: he treated paint as treasure, building his surfaces from accumulated layers of gold, jewel-tones, and dense ornament until the painting itself became an object to be possessed. The two works captioned here, framed by a third image that needs no commentary, trace that obsession: a mythological apparition emerging in dense architectural setting, and a close treatment of Salome dancing before Herod in jeweled costume.

BEFORE HEROD

SALOME

Moreau painted the dancing Salome before Herod time and again – in oil, watercolour and countless drawings. The dancer in her costume studded with precious stones, the king on his throne, the architectural depth of the palace in the background: he treated this single motif as a lifelong exploration of power, desire and ornamentation. The square composition is worth a closer look – every gem on the costume, every architectural ornament is a small monument in its own right.

IN THE TEMPLE

APPARITION

A mythological scene set in dense classical architecture — a small group of figures gathered around a vision or apparition. Moreau painted these tableaus throughout his career, dressing them in accumulated ornament until the architecture itself became character. The warm gold of his palette finds its natural home here.

BÖCKLIN — ISLANDS OF MEMORY

Arnold Böcklin was Symbolism’s most classical voice. The Swiss master worked at the meeting point of nordic melancholy and ancient Mediterranean myth: cypress trees, calm bays, robed figures contemplating still water in the slow gold of evening. His landscapes are not places but moods — suspended between dream and threat, between classical memory and northern solitude. The three works gathered here trace that suspended atmosphere: a single Triton emerging from warm Mediterranean water, a small wooded island seen across calm water at sunset, and a single robed figure walking alone on a warm shoreline.

ALONE

SHORELINE

A single robed figure walking alone on a warm Mediterranean shoreline at evening. No story, no destination — only the long warm light, the soft sand, the distant promontory. Böcklin painted these solitary walks as quiet companions to his larger mythological tableaus. The single figure as classical witness.

ACROSS THE WATER

ISLAND

A small wooded island seen across calm warm water at sunset, dark cypress trees rising vertically from rocky shores, a few architectural fragments — perhaps a small temple or tomb — visible among the trees. Böcklin painted versions of this composition throughout his life. The island as the place memory goes when it is finished with the world. Each fragment rewards close looking: the cypress silhouettes, the architectural carving, the reflection on water, the shoreline rocks.

FROM THE WATER

TRITON

A single mythological figure — half-man, half-sea creature — emerging from the warm waters of a Mediterranean cove. Böcklin loved these moments where myth made itself visible, the supernatural emerging from natural setting as if it had always been there. The Mediterranean of his imagination was a continuous afternoon.

REDON — THE LATE LIGHT

At the turn of the century, Odilon Redon laid down the charcoal and picked up color. The transition was as dramatic as any in nineteenth-century painting: the dark dream-archive gave way to a blooming, breathing world of warm pastels and oil — flowers, profiles, mythological figures suspended in fields of pure tone. He had no explanation for the change; the inward and the outward had simply switched places. The three works gathered here trace that blooming: a warm bouquet of flowers in a small vase, a winged angel suspended in atmospheric pastel space, and a profile head against a decorative warm background of flowers and ornament.

AGAINST FLOWERS

DECORATED

A portrait set against a decorative, warm background of flowers and ornamental patterns – the late Redon at the height of his Byzantine phase. The dream had returned to the world.

IN A SMALL VASE

BOUQUET

A small vase of flowers — anemones, daisies, marigolds — set against a warm wall in soft afternoon light. Redon painted dozens of these bouquets in his last fifteen years, and each one feels like a kind of prayer. The flowers half-real, half-symbolic, the vessel both itself and the urn that held everything dark.
